Rett syndrome , a unique neurodevelopmental disorder seen almost exclusively in females, was first recognized about 50 years ago by Andreas Rett , a developmental pediatrician in Vienna, and virtually simultaneously by Bengt Hagberg, a Swedish neurologist.
