Identifying the cellular origin of fibrosis

Researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital have identified what they believe to be the cells responsible for fibrosis, the buildup of scar tissue This is a Gli1 progenitor cell located in a healthy kidney. During fibrosis these cells differentiate into myofibroblasts, causing scarring and organ failure.
