Stem cell therapy may help treat Type 2 diabetes

New research shows that transplanting human pancreatic stem cells into mice with Type 2 diabetes symptoms, then giving them antidiabetic drugs, improved the mice's health significantly. "There have been similar reports looking at treatment of type 1 diabetes by stem cell-based replacement, and there are many people around the world who are interested in that," said lead study author Timothy J. Kieffer, a UBC molecular and cellular medicine professor.
