Leslie M. Thompson, a UC Irvine professor of psychiatry and human behavior as well as neurobiology and behavior, will lead the university's efforts implementing an $8 million, six-year grant from the National Institutes of Health to create a database of brain cell activity, helping to fight neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease. UCI is collaborating with other universities, including MIT and John Hopkins, to create the database that can be accessed by any scientist in the country.
