The discovery in 1998 of a way to extract and grow human embryonic stem cells was hailed as the dawn of an era of "regenerative medicine", in which new cells could be implanted into patients to replace diseased or missing tissues. Diabetes was immediately seen as one of the top prospects for regenerative treatment, if new insulin-producing beta cells could be produced to replace the ones that disappear in type 1 patients.
