Dr. Takahashi, who works at Riken Center for Developmental Biology in Kobe, led the first-ever transplant surgery of retinal cells that were made from the patient's own cells using an induced stem-cell technology. Dr. Takahashi "had made the cells from induced pluripotent stem cells, which have been widely touted for their potential to generate genetically-matched tissue for treating a range of diseases.
